I remember being part of the Yu-Gi-Oh! craze back in the early 00’s, watching Yugi Moto’s adventures with Joey Wheeler and crew as they participated in bad guy Pegasus’ Duel Monsters tournament in what was then part of the Kids’ WB Saturday morning cartoon block. I also played the trading card game fervently with friends in between classes, going so far to participate in a local tournament or two to test out my deck building skills. Eventually I did move on from the card game and the TV show, leaving after the first couple of expansions and right around the time Yugi and team fought against Marik, but since then, the series has moved on, focusing on new characters, themes and enemies, going through four more series. With Konami’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist, players can play the game once again, this time with content from all five series, including story campaigns and cards from all of them. But is all the content so far in the series enough to get players dueling once again?

As mentioned before, Legacy of the Duelist covers the five main series of the game: Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL and Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. It starts off with the original storyline, with Yugi Moto, who unbeknownst to him, is possessed by an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who is a master at Duel Monsters, a popular card game that is based on ancient sorcerer battles. The game follows his and his friends’ exploits as he masters the game, and later other heroes who participated in their own battles as well. Plot-wise, the stories in Legacy of the Duelist are your typical anime plots, with a small hero learning and improving challenge after challenge, set against the backdrop of a trading card game that’s larger than life. While fans of the series and younger players will appreciate the recaps of the five series, regular players will mostly see them as silly plots that feature young kids and adults fighting with card games. Still, it’s fun stuff, and the game does a great job at summarizing all the significant story events.
Legacy of the Duelist forgoes all the gameplay fluff and concentrates solely on the dueling, which is fantastic. Dueling with opponents is easy and very faithful to the trading card game, as it presents a version of the experience that feels just like playing the real thing. As expected, players take turns summoning all manner of creatures to attack opponents and enemies or defend from incoming attacks, use trap cards to use spells during the opponent’s turn, and magic cards to use spells in yours. The game features a simple tutorial which teaches players the ropes when it comes to card placement, using the various card types, and all the different little strategies you need to come out on top, so players don’t have to worry if they’ve never played a match before.
The game UI (user interface) is well done, streamlining the game process so that players can easily select cards, know which ones they are using and what each one does without having to go through a ton of screens, easily switch between the different turn phases with minimal effort, activate card effects, and more. It’s a really great system that’s very simple to use, and it takes the hassle out of many of the card game’s mechanics, but it occasionally has some issues, mostly with the activation of trap cards, which can be used during the opponent’s turn. Since these cards are meant to interrupt an opponent’s action as counters, the game constantly asks players via a pop up if they want to activate them, freezing up the game progress until an option is selected. Since each turn has tons of micro actions and quite a few phases, this pop up appears quite often and is a bit annoying, since it interrupts the flow of the game. It’s an understandable gameplay mechanic, since it’s a key component of the game, but I would have preferred an option where players can choose to activate a card by pressing a button themselves instead of asking every couple of seconds.
Another issue is that the dueling also has the occasional battle animation, typically reserved for the more recognized and powerful cards, that cannot be skipped. Seeing an unskippable Blue-Eyes White Dragon summoning for the first time is fun, but after the third or fourth time it becomes quite a bit repetitive and time consuming. It’s not that big of an issue, but it is a distraction.
Legacy of the Duelist features quite a few gameplay modes to get you dueling, offering different cards and decks to use. First off is the campaign mode, which lets players run through each of the five series’ storylines as the protagonist and key characters. One of the cool features here is that players can use the character’s deck as it was during that specific point the story, or players can use their own custom deck to destroy the completion with their unique cards and strategies. Additionally, when campaign battles are completed, most also allow players to replay the encounters as the opponent, giving them a chance to use the rival’s deck and change the course of history in a sort of “what if” scenario.
There’s also single battles that have players pit their decks against characters in the series in Duelist Challenges, and these are a bit more difficult than Campaign mode, as the A.I. is relentless. Thankfully, players can use their own decks once again, or use previously unlocked pre-made decks to use set strategies. The game also features battle pack play, which are sealed deck formats that have players build decks from select booster packs and use these in duels.
Speaking of custom decks, players will also be able to make their own by collecting cards through completing campaign missions and buying booster packs in the in-game store using in-game currency. Booster packs can be purchased for cards from all five series, meaning that players can mix and match cards and strategies as they’d like, which is excellent.
Download minecraft bedrock edition pc free windows 10. Most importantly of all, the game also features multiplayer, which has duelists duke it out with others all around the world for bragging rights. Online mode features standard duels and ranked ones, so players can practice in one and rise up the leaderboards in the other. Playing against A.I. opponents is fine, but the real challenge comes from facing off against others who have unique strategies of their own.
Overall, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist is a great Yu-Gi-Oh! game that masterfully recreates the trading card game experience and provides the best version of the game to date. While it has its issues, like the annoying trap card activation pop ups and unskippable battle animations, it’s solid card gaming that will have fans and newcomers busy for a good long time.
